Core Functions for Board Registered MISA I/II

ADMISSIONS SCREENING - The process by which a client is determined appropriate and eligible for admission to a particular program.

INTAKE - The administrative and initial assessment procedures for admission to a MISA program area and the suggested focus for treatment.

ORIENTATION - The process of describing the following to the client:
  • general nature and goals of the program
  • rules governing client conduct and infractions that can lead to disciplinary action or discharge from the program
  • the methods/hours during which services are available in a nonresidential program and provisions for emergency contact during hours in which services/emergency services are not available
  • treatment costs to be borne by the client, if any
  • client's rights
ASSESSMENT - The procedures by which a MISA Professional identifies and evaluates an individual's strengths, weaknesses, problems, and needs for the development of the treatment plan.

TREATMENT PLANNING - The process by which the MISA professional and the client:
  • identify and rank problems needing resolution
  • establish agreed upon immediate and long-term goals
  • decide on a treatment process and the resources to be used
COUNSELING (INDIVIDUAL, GROUP, AND FAMILY/SIGNIFICANT OTHERS) - The utilization of special skills to assist individuals, families, or groups in achieving objectives through:
  • exploration of a problem and its ramifications
  • examination of attitudes and feelings
  • consideration of alternative solutions
  • decision making
MISA CASE MANAGEMENT - Activities that bring services, agencies, resources, or people together within a planned framework of action toward the achievement of established goals. Case Management may involve liaison activities and collateral contacts.

CRISIS INTERVENTION - The provision of services that respond to a MISA client's needs during acute emotional and/or physical distress.

CLIENT EDUCATION - Provision of information to individuals and groups concerning MISA clients and availability of services/resources in each community.

REFERRAL - Identifying the needs of the client that cannot be met by the MISA Professional or agency and assisting the client in using the support systems and community resources available.

REPORTS AND RECORDKEEPING - Charting results of the assessment and treatment plan, writing reports, progress notes, discharge summaries and client related data.

CONSULTATION WITH OTHER PROFESSIONALS - In regard to client treatment/services, communicating with professionals to assure comprehensive, quality care for the client.

INTERVENTION - The formalized process of attempting to interrupt the progression of mental illness and substance abuse/dependence as indicated by high-risk behaviors.
  • Employee Assistance Program: Familiarity with the concepts of employee assistance programs and the appropriate roles each party plays in the intervention process.

  • Legal System: Familiarity with the legal system and the ramifications of mental illness and alcohol and other drug abuse/dependence on the legal aspects of the MISA individual's life. MISA Professionals must be able to understand legal complications for clients they are serving and their appropriate role in serving the client.

  • School: Familiarity with how local school systems function, the formalized programs that could result in intervention for students, and the appropriate role of all parties in the intervention, treatment and aftercare process.
SUPERVISION - The process of assuring that each MISA Professional is provided monitoring and feedback to assure that quality MISA services are being delivered.

ATTITUDES TOWARDS MISA POPULATIONS - The process of interacting with clients meeting the MISA symptomatology.

ROLES, BOUNDARIES, AND PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIP DYNAMICS - The nature of relationships between counselor and client/patient.

HEALTH AND SAFETY - The process of identifying environmental characteristics that could adversely affect the well being of the MISA client.
