Substance Abuse Professionals (SAPs) Re-Qualification

To be in compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, Substance Abuse Professionals (SAPs) who were certified in 2003, must renew their credential in 2006. They must receive and submit 12 hours of additional qualified training to renew the SAP credential by their expiration date. Substance Abuse Professionals who do not renew are not legally eligible to practice as a SAP, and fines can be imposed on employers and/or individuals who are practicing without being in compliance with DOT regulations. Also, SAPs can face possible sanctions by the DOT, thus putting their licenses and careers in jeopardy. The regulations for re-qualification are available on the DOT web site at www.dot.gov/ost/dapc, once at this site select the Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations, or call the DOT at 800-225-3784.

IAODAPCA has a home study course available that meets the re-qualification standard. Information regarding this course can be found on the IAODAPCA web site here, or call (217) 698-8110.

NAADAC also has a home study course available that meets the re-qualification standard. The revised course explains each new regulation and addresses prominent questions from addiction professionals and adds sample assessment forms. It also includes a 50-item written examination. Information regarding this course can be found at www.naadac.org, or call 800-548-0497, or e-mail naadac@naadac.org

These courses can be used for re-qualification if you did not previously use them for the initial SAP certification.
